On this page we want to give you some general and growing info about the Porophyllum Saxifraga's we grow and sell.
So beginner or advanced alpineplant grower, it's a good start to read this page before ordering.

The Genus Saxifraga
Its's not our intention to write a comprehensive article about the Saxifraga's we grow on this page. If you want to know more about Saxifraga's in general or the Porophyllum and Ligulatae section, internet is a great source nowadays.
Saxifraga's are a very large plant family and you can find them in nature almost all over the world. We grow two sections from that family, the Porophyllum (Kabschia) and the ligulatae (Silver) section. These sections are counted among the alpine plants. Some botanical Saxifraga's even grow on a height above 5500 m! We grow many botanical and cultivar Saxifraga's. In short, botanical Saxifraga's are the ones that grow in the wild and cultivars come from crosses between botanical Saxifraga's made by man. Over the years many many cultivars have emerged. Because Porophyllum Saxifraga's stay green whole year they are very important for our rockgardens.

How to grow in your alpine garden
We grow almost all the excisting botanical and cultivars in our alpine garden. As you can understand plants like this from a completely different environment need some adjustment in our lowland alpine gardens. So the least we can do is give them a suitable spot and soil mix. Some basic rules are important. All Porophyllum's do not like too much sun and warmth on the hottest hours. So place the alpine garden on a North-East or North-West direction, never on a south facing spot. They need a soil which is very very fast draining. Our autumn/winter are different from the mountain area. In nature Saxes sleep under snow cover in winter time. In our area atumn and winter are more wet as cold. Soil must be rather lean and poor, with a lot of gravelly stone in different gradations, so water can flow easily away. They do not like a high food content in the soil, so they do not need any kind of fertilizer. They just don't benefit from that. Ofcourse there's a lot more to tell. In the descriptions in our lists you find the information for each individual plant.
Abbreviations in the lists
WD means in our lists 'Well drained soil', like we explain above in 'how to grow'. That's the best for almost all Saxifragas in our lowland rock gardens. But some cultivars do have a bloodline which require a bit more humus rich potting soil. We indicate this by the plants who need this. But.....a fast drainage remains necessary! A wise saying about water and the rock garden is....'One can give water when needed, but wringing out the soil when too wet is....not possible' Some Saxes are better in Tuf stone or in an Alpine house, and some need over head protection when autumn/winter is to wet. We also indicate this in the description by the plants. The following pictures are an example how you can make protection with some aluminum strips and plexiglass.
How we grow the plants you buy
We do not propagate all the Porophyllum we grow in our collection. Some are just to difficult to propagate and grow in our climate. So we make a selection of good and reliable botanical and cultivars which can grow -some with a bit more attention- in our lowland alpine gardens. This selection can vary each season a bit. The plants for sale will be published in a list which you can require by sending an email. Because we grow our Saxes in a old fashioned way it can take some time when a sold out plant is back in the list. We give our plants the time to grow in a poor lean soil without any fertilizers. Growing the plants this way gives us strong and more hardy plants. Most Saxifraga's grow rather slow, so please understand that the plants we sell are rather small! It's also much better to plant out small Saxifraga's because they have a much much better regrow in your alpine garden.
